Games
- Karuta ie. ask the Japanese students to call out the hiragana and the Australian students have to snap the cards. Then reverse it.
- Mintie wrapper ripping competition ie. tear the mintie wrapper and see how long you can continue to tear it before it breaks
- Chopstick Relays eg teams of 4 (mixed with Australian & Japanese students and teachers). Line up, first person has Hachimaki and chopsticks, has to run to a table and transfer 4-6 jellybabies from plate to plate, run back, give Hachimaki and chopsticks to next person.

Pass the parcel
Play Pass-The-Parcel with visiting Japanese student groups as an ice-breaker activity. Print off the tasks and insert it between each layer of paper. Each one could be wrapped around a lolly. The final layer revealing a wrapped prize.

Scavenger hunt
- divide the class into small groups (include one Japanese student per group), give instructions of places to visit around the school, at each location students ask and answer questions or complete an activity together with the Japanese visitor, then follow instructions to the next location
- practice giving and receiving directions around the school or local neighbourhood
Scavenger hunt using QR codes
Students move around the school scanning QR codes with their smart phone (or other device) and follow the recorded question prompts. (Detailed instructions in the file attached.)

Scavenger hunt (example)
Divide the class into groups including one Japanese visiting student in each. Start the activity by handing out printed QR codes with the clue to the first destination. The students then continue from there finding each clue. (For details on creating QR codes see the above activity.)

Taste testing
Organise some samples of typical Australian food (such as Vegemite on crackers, lamingtons, Tim tams etc) and Japanese snacks (senbei, nori, onigiri etc) for students in groups of 5-6 to try. The students work through the worksheet and ask each other questions before trying the various foods. Donated by T Damon
