The person who is finished first is the winner. This person must then tell the class the birthdays they have on their sheet. Donated by A Buttigieg

Skipping Months
Take Ss outside with a long skipping rope. Get the Ss to stand all to one side of the rope. As each Ss goes to jump the skipping rope they must say a month in Japanese. If they get the month wrong then they need to go back to the end of the line of Ss. If the month is their birthday month they need to stay skipping and say all 12 months.
Sumimasen Buzz
Put Ss into small groups. Ss counts go round the group saying the days of the week getsu you bi げつようび to nichi you bi にちようび. But instead of saying sui you bi すいようび they must say simimasen すみません. If a Ss says the wrong thing or takes too long to answer they must stand up. The next person who makes a mistake then stands up and the first person who made a mistake can now sit down. OR When a Ss makes a mistake they stand and take a week day card from the Tt. This week day becomes the new starting point Ie the Ss gets do you bi どようび so the group starts saying the days from do you bi どようび. EXTRA: This can also be done using days of the month, months of the year. Ss can stand up if they say their birthday month or day. When the next Ss stands they can then sit again.
Time expression grid
Preparation- Copy a ‘Day, week, month, year’ grid for each pair of students. Cut up the Japanese words and put them into an envelope. What to do - Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair of student a copy of the grid and envelope of words. Students need to put the words under the correct heading and in the correct ‘time’ position. EXTRA: After completing the grid once, get the class to do the activity again but this time see which pair can complete the grid the fastest. Created by I Foley

Battleships dates
Divide the class into pairs. Give each Ss a worksheet. Each Ss decides where to place their fleet on the grid - one Aircraft Carrier (5 squares), one Battleship (4 squares), one Cruiser (3 squares), two Destroyers (2 squares) and two Submarines (1 square). These must be drawn vertically or horizontally only. When each player has marked their fleet on their grid, begin play. Take turns to “shoot” at your opponents’ fleet by calling out the day and month in Japanese. ie. Ichi gatsu, tsuitachi 一月、一日. Your opponent must say whether the shot is a "miss" or a "hit" and, if it is a "hit", what type of ship it is. Play continues until one player wins by successfully sinking the whole of the other player's fleet. Donated by S Gamble |
