Games in class
Bingo - animals
Copy page 1 and cut out cards individually. These cards are the Bingo Calling cards. Put these cards into a small box. Print page 2 - 6 and cut into strips of four animals, laminate. These are the bingo strips. Give each Ss a copy of a bingo strip. Each Ss also needs 4 blank squares of paper. The game begins. The Tt takes one Bingo calling card out of the box at a time and says the animal in Japanese. If the Ss has the animal on their bingo strip then the Ss puts a blank square paper on top of the animal. Once all 4 animals have blank squares on them the Ss calls out 'BINGO' and is the winner. This Ss then must tell the Tt the 4 animals he/she has to check that he/she is correct. EXTRA: Tt can be replaced by Ss to call out the animals, and depending on their ability either picture or hiragana Bingo calling cards can be used. Donated by L Jerome |

Decide who will go first by playing Junkenpon. The first player puts down a domino then the next player puts down another domino that matches the word or picture of the previous domino(es). If he/she can't go they pass and pick up a domino from the pile. A player wins the game when he/she has no dominoes left. Donated by Nicole H |
|
Create animal cards. Cut the cards in half. Ie. the head of a cow and then the bottom of a cow. Ss need to know the Japanese for animals, numbers, body parts, features, verbs associated with animals (fly, swim, walk etc). Give each Ss an animal card in random order. Ss mingle around the class finding their other half. Make sure Ss don't show their partners their card. Ss must ask their partner questions ie. Tobimasu ka? とびますか?ke wa chairo desu ka? けはちゃいろですか。Etc. When they find their animal they can sit down together.

Once all groups have accurately matched all picture cards with word cards the Tt then says one of the karuta card words in Japanese. The Ss that can show the matching picture card to the Tt the fastest gets a point for his/her team. EXTRA: These cards can also be used to play memory. Donated by Nicole H |
|
Karuta - animal pictures
Divide the class into pairs. Give each pair of Ss a set of cards. The Tt says the Japanese animal word (or words that relate to the pictures ie. describe a cat - ながい しっぽ nagai shippo, ちいさい め chiisai me, nyanya にゃにゃetc.). The Ss challenge each other to grab the card first. The Ss that does gets to keep the card. If both snap just as quickly they need to do rock, paper, scissors to see who keeps the card.
