Restaurant excursion tasks
Give Ss a copy of the worksheet before going to a Japanese restaurant. Ss complete tasks before going, while at the restaurant and after the excursion. Donated by H Na.

Restaurant in Japan
Students design a restaurant in Japan, create a menu, and then perform a dialogue between a customer and a waiter within the newly designed restaurant. Donated by J Neilson

Board games
Food board game
Students work their way around the board game by either tossing a coin (one move for heads, two moves for tails) or a dice. They must say the food item in Japanese. If they are incorrect they must go back to where they originally were. The first person to reach 'gooru' is the winner. Donated by K Duquemin

Likes and dislikes board game (food)
Toss a coin and move around the game board, 1 move for heads, 2 for tails. When a Ss lands on a food item the person to the left of them must ask if they like the particular food or drink item in Japanese. The person who tossed the coin must respond. (There is one yellow prompt card per person aimed at giving Ss a guide on how to answer and respond correctly in Japanese.) Extra: Ss must say each Japanese phrase on the yellow prompt card before reaching the goal, if they reach the goal before this they must return to the start. The winner is the first person to reach the goal having said all Japanese phrases. Created by I Foley

Teaching cooking

Games in class
Bingo - Food
Set of Bingo cards (26 different cards) and calling card sheet. Words included are: orenji, kinoko, nashi, sushi, banana, piza, ringo, sarada, ichigo,pan, painappuru, hanbaaga, tomato, aisukuriimu, ninjin, chokoreeto, kyuri and pasuta. How to play: Print out the Bingo cards and calling sheet. Cut out the call sheet and put the squares into a hat or bowl. Hand out one Bingo card to each student. The teacher calls out the Japanese food vocabulary. The students place markers, rocks, fun foam pieces or something similar on the called image if it is on their card. Once a predetermined pattern is made on a card, the child with that card calls out "Bingo". Donated by C Hall. |

Food Sentences
Divide the class into groups of 2 or 3. Ss use the cards to make up as many grammatically correct sentences as possible. Ss read out their sentences and receive a point for each that is grammatically correct. OR Tt can say a sentence in English and the Ss use the cards to create the sentence in Japanese. Fruit Basket
Ss sit in a circle with one Ss in the middle. The Ss in the middle says a statement that reviews a target structure. Eg. 「バナナが好きです。」 Ss with the same opinion then they must stand and swap chairs. The last person standing becomes the new person in the middle. (To make this more challenging the Ss can’t take a seat that is next to them they must move at least two seats away.)

Jeopardy game 1 - cooking
Review vocabulary, phrases and questions related to food and cooking. HOW TO PLAY: Divide the class into two groups. Each group should work together to come up with a category that they would like to start with. Have teams roll dice to see which one goes first. The first team chooses a category and an amount. Click on the Jeopardy board. A question will appear. Ss have 30 seconds to consult for an answer. If they get it correct, they get the $ value for their team, and if not, the other team gets a chance to "steal" the same amount if it guesses the right answer. Songs and chants
Fruit and vegatable chant
Two chants with lyrics and audio. One for fruits and one for vegetables in Japanese. On the audio, the chant is first deomstrated then the drum beat continues and students try to continue chanting. Letter reading workstations
Divide the class into small groups of approx 4 students. Create 3 workstations (A, B, and C). Each work station has a different letter to read. Assign a different workstation to each group of students. Ss read their Japanese letters and translate them into English. After 15 minutes the groups rotate to the next work station. Continue until all workstations have been visited. Next, divide the class into pairs, ensure each pair came from a different original small group. In pairs Ss check their translations.
